Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar – Security has been heightened around Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb in Khuldabad, Maharashtra, following threats from Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) demanding its removal, reported the Hindustan Times.
The Maharashtra government has deployed additional State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) personnel to the site amid escalating tensions. Authorities have also banned Hindutva leader Milind Ekbote from entering Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar until April 5, citing the need to prevent potential unrest.
Ekbote’s remarks, labeling Aurangzeb’s tomb a “symbol of oppression”, have fueled controversy, with Bajrang Dal vowing action if the government fails to address their demand. Meanwhile, Congress leader Harshvardhan Sapkal has strongly opposed the calls for demolition, arguing that such actions are aimed at erasing India’s historical legacy.
The debate gained momentum following the release of the Marathi film ‘Chhaava’, which portrays Sambhaji Maharaj’s conflict with Aurangzeb, further stoking sentiments among right-wing groups.
Adding to the controversy, Samajwadi Party leader Abu Asim Azmi defended Aurangzeb as a just ruler, claiming he contributed to India’s prosperity and even built Hindu temples. His remarks triggered backlash, leading him to issue a clarification.
With tensions at a peak, security forces remain on high alert, as Maharashtra braces for further developments in this politically charged dispute.
