Major Issues in New Criminal Laws Not Addressed: Owaisi

Hyderabad, June 30: AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi said today that there are major issues in implementation of three new criminal laws but the government has not addressed them.

“The three new criminal laws will come into force tomorrow. Despite major issues in their implementation, the government has done nothing to address them,” he said.

The Hyderabad MP posted on his ‘X’ handle a video of his speech delivered in Lok Sabha while participating in the debate on three new criminal bills.

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and the Bharatiya Sakshya Bill (BSB) were passed in December 2023. They replace the Indian Penal Code, 1860, the Code of Criminal Procedure Act, 1898, and the Indian Evidence Act, 1872, respectively.

Owaisi had termed the three bills as ‘criminal’ and warned that they will be a danger to democracy and harm weaker sections of society like Muslims, Dalits and tribals.

He mentioned that 30 percent of prisoners across the country and 33 percent of prisoners in Uttar Pradesh alone belong to the Muslim community.

Alleging that police were given sweeping powers to take action against anyone, the MP said that the bills are a threat to the civil liberty and rights of the people.

“These bills are against the common people of the country as their rights will be snatched away once they become laws,” he said.

The AIMIM chief said several provisions incorporated in the BNS were very dangerous.

“Once these legislations are implemented, police will act as judge, jury and executor,” he remarked.

Owaisi said that the offence of sedition has been introduced in a different form and the punishment has also been enhanced from three years to seven years.
