Malta to Officially Recognise Palestine at UN General Assembly in September

Valletta— Malta has announced its decision to officially recognise the State of Palestine during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session scheduled for September 2025, reported the Reuters.
Prime Minister Robert Abela shared the news via a Facebook post on July 29, stating, “Our position expresses our commitment to efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace in the Middle East.” The declaration marks a significant diplomatic step in support of the Palestinian cause amid intensifying global calls for a two-state solution.
The announcement was reaffirmed by Malta’s Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Christopher Cutajar, during a high-level summit on Palestinian statehood co-hosted by France and Saudi Arabia in New York.
Malta’s move aligns with a broader international trend, following recent declarations of support from countries like France, the United Kingdom, and several others in 2024. In total, 147 of the 193 UN member states have now officially recognised Palestine as a sovereign state.
In 2024 alone, Armenia, Slovenia, Ireland, Norway, Spain, the Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, and Barbados joined the list of nations recognising Palestinian statehood.
This global push for recognition has gained momentum in the wake of the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict that erupted after a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023.
According to the Gaza Health Ministry, over 60,000 people, including civilians and combatants, have died in the conflict so far.
Malta has consistently supported a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, advocating for the two-state solution as the only viable path to lasting peace in the region.
The upcoming recognition at the UNGA is expected to further strengthen international advocacy for Palestinian rights and statehood.
