Gangasagar: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday accused the Election Commission of using mobile applications developed by the BJP IT cell. She described the tools as illegal, unconstitutional, and undemocratic. Her remarks came amid rising tensions over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in the state.
Banerjee said the revision process created serious ground level problems. Living voters appeared marked as deceased. Elderly residents and patients on oxygen support received summons for hearings. She said officials conducted the exercise without proper training, which led to harassment of ordinary citizens.
The Trinamool Congress has intensified its confrontation with the poll body. Party leaders alleged coordination between the Election Commission and the BJP. Banerjee announced plans to approach the Supreme Court against the revision drive. Trinamool sources said senior advocate and Serampore MP Kalyan Banerjee filed a petition on behalf of Rajya Sabha leader Derek O’Brien and MP Dola Sen.
Speaking at Gangasagar during preparations for the annual pilgrimage fair, Banerjee said she would go to the apex court as a common citizen to speak for the people affected by the process. She said repeated letters to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar sought an immediate halt to the revision.
Trinamool national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee earlier met the chief election commissioner on December 31. He raised concerns over exclusion of booth level workers and enumeration issues involving 1.36 crore voters in Bengal. Party leaders said officials flagged logical discrepancies in voter forms without transparent clarification.
The dispute has placed electoral integrity and voter rights at the center of political debate in the state.
