Kuala Lumpur, Aug 29: The Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (Abim) has confirmed that a man who narrowly escaped falling into a sinkhole in Jalan Masjid India in Kuala Lumpur has embraced Islam. According to Abim, the conversion occurred at the organization’s Islamic outreach centre, IOA, located within the National Mosque, reported the Malay Mail.
In a statement, Abim’s President Ahmad Fahmi Mohd Samsudin revealed that the conversion took place last Monday at IOA Masjid Negara. He highlighted that faith is a fundamental human right and stressed that conversions should not involve coercion or pressure.
A CCTV footage released by the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department shows the man nearly falling into an 8-metre deep sinkhole that formed near a bench on August 23. In the footage, the man is seen being pulled into the sinkhole up to his waist but manages to climb back to safety. Meanwhile, the woman who was also near the sinkhole has not yet been found, with the search continuing into its seventh day.
Ahmad Fahmi urged for respect for the new convert’s privacy during this time.
