6 May 2024: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has initiated a vigorous crackdown on deforestation and opium poppy cultivation in the state, revealing startling statistics on the loss of forest cover. In a recent announcement, he disclosed that 291 encroachers have been evicted from reserved and protected forests since the BJP assumed power in 2017.
According to Mr. Singh, Manipur witnessed a decline in forest cover from 17,475 sqkm in 1987 to 16,598 sqkm in 2021, with a significant portion – 877 sqkm – being destroyed primarily for opium poppy cultivation. Emphasizing the gravity of the situation, he shared a four-minute video outlining the challenges posed by deforestation and illegal cultivation practices.
Addressing concerns over ethnic tensions, particularly between the Kuki tribes and the valley-dominant Meitei community, Mr. Singh clarified that the evictions were not targeted at any specific group but aimed at preserving the state’s natural resources.
The video caption urged collective action to combat illegal encroachments and immigrant settlements, stressing the vital role of the community in preserving Manipur’s ecological balance.
Recent data from the Manipur Remote Sensing Applications Centre indicated a 60% decline in opium poppy cultivation since 2021, reflecting the effectiveness of the state government’s “war on drugs” campaign. Mr. Singh’s proactive measures have garnered praise, reaffirming his commitment to environmental preservation.
Having secured a second term in 2022, Mr. Singh’s leadership continues to prioritize sustainable development and conservation efforts in Manipur.
The Chief Minister’s initiative underscores the urgent need for collective action to safeguard the environment and combat illegal practices threatening Manipur’s ecological integrity.
