Martyrdom of Imam Hussain (علیه السلام) on Ashura – 10th Muharram

An eternal message of faith, courage, vision, and endurance.
Karbala still illuminates and nurtures the soul of humanity.
– Abdul Baari Masoud
On the scorching plains of Karbala, the world witnessed not just brutality and tragedy, but in reality, it was the eternal triumph of truth over tyranny, light over darkness, and soul over sword.
The martyrdom (Shahadat) of Imam Hussain ibn Ali (علیه السلام) was not a quest for power, political control, or personal gain. It was a spiritual uprising, a stand to safeguard the essence of true Islam, to preserve human dignity, and to awaken the conscience of the Ummah for all time to come.
Imam Hussain (علیه السلام) rose when silence would have meant the death of divine truth. His refusal to pledge allegiance to a corrupt and oppressive ruler was an act of profound moral courage.
In his words:
“I have not risen to spread evil or show off. I only desire to reform the Ummah of Rasul Allah Muhammad ﷺ.”
This was not a rebellion; it was a divine mission.
Karbala became the stage where love met sacrifice, where truth met brutality, and where a small caravan of pious people stood against the might of falsehood.
The message of Karbala is not bound by history or sectarian boundaries. It is the eternal call to the soul to rise for what is right, even when standing alone. Imam Hussain’s (علیه السلام) sacrifice was a living tafsir (exegesis) of the Quranic verse:
“And do not think of those who are killed in the way of Allah as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision.”
(Surah Aal-e-Imran, 3:169)
Muttaqeens, Sufis, mystics, and Auliya Allah throughout history have understood the depth of this sacrifice. A verse of poetry expresses this beautifully:
> کشتگانِ خنجرِ تسلیم را
ہر زماں از غیب جانِ دیگر است
“Those slain by the sword of submission to Allah ﷻ’s will experience in every moment a new vibrant life and soul from the unseen.”
This is not death; it is rebirth in divine proximity. It is the soul’s emancipation from the world’s chains into the embrace of the Eternal Beloved.
The martyrdom of Imam Hussain (علیه السلام) was not an end, but the beginning of a spiritual revolution that continues to awaken hearts, spirits, and souls.
Imam Hussain (علیه السلام) stood not only for his family or tribe, but for all of humanity. He stood for:
  • Truth against falsehood
  • Justice against oppression
  • Faith against fear
  • Honor over humiliation
Conscience over compromise
He proved that true Islam is not about dominance, but about spiritual integrity; not about political manipulation, but about ethical clarity; not about coercion, but about compassion and conviction.
The martyrdom of Imam Hussain (علیه السلام) was not a passing moment in time; it was a timeless echo that continues to inspire movements of justice across the globe. From Rumi to Iqbal to Malcolm X, the message of Karbala has touched every heart that seeks to live with honor or die with dignity.
As Allama Iqbal said:
“Islam is a battle against evil to bring truth, justice and peace to humanity, and Karbala is the paramount example of it.”
On this sacred occasion, we send our honors, love, and tribute to Imam Hussain (علیه السلام) and all the martyrs of Karbala.
May the spirit of Karbala live forever and safeguard the spirit of humanity. Ameen.
