Widespread protests have broken out across several regions of Manipur, especially in Imphal East and Bishnupur districts, in opposition to the Waqf Amendment Bill. A significant number of Muslim women also took part in the demonstrations, raising their voices against the proposed law, reported the Hindu.
A prominent protest march commenced in Kwakta, a town in Bishnupur district, where participants walked nearly 4 kilometers, chanting slogans and expressing concerns that the bill could strip the Muslim community of its rights and weaken the constitutional framework of the country. Protesters demanded the immediate rollback of the bill.
In Imphal East, demonstrators staged human chain rallies, but rising tensions led the administration to step up security arrangements. Violence broke out in Lilong, a Muslim-majority area in Thoubal district, as clashes occurred between protestors and paramilitary forces. Authorities have since intensified security measures to control the situation.
The Superintendent of Police in Thoubal stated that forces have been equipped with tear gas, batons, body shields, and helmets to manage law and order effectively.
The protest movement continues to spread across the Imphal valley. Additional security has been deployed around sensitive spots, including the residence of local MLA Abdul Nasir, to avoid any further unrest.
