Mass Resignations Rock Congress Minority Unit in Mangaluru Over ‘Revenge Killings’; Govt Responds with Communal Violence Control Force

Mangaluru/Bengaluru : In a dramatic turn of events, a wave of resignations swept through the Congress party’s minority cell in Dakshina Kannada on Thursday, as Muslim leaders and workers expressed deep discontent over what they called government apathy amid a disturbing pattern of revenge killings targeting the Muslim community, reported the Newsminute.
The mass resignations were announced during an emergency meeting held at Bolar, Mangaluru. Emotions ran high as both grassroots workers and senior party members gathered in response to the recent brutal murder of Abdul Rahman, secretary of a mosque in the Kolathamajalu area. Party workers stormed the stage demanding justice and expressing frustration at the perceived lack of action by the government.
The protest took a political toll as Suhail Kandak, state secretary of the Youth Congress, became the first to resign. His resignation set off a chain reaction, with several others stepping down in solidarity, sending a stern signal to the Congress high command and the Karnataka government.
Present at the meeting were KPCC general secretary MS Mohammed, Dakshina Kannada District Congress Minority Unit President Shahul Hameed, and other senior leaders who struggled to contain the outrage. Despite efforts to pacify the gathering, chaos persisted, highlighting the depth of discontent within the ranks.
Reacting to the upheaval, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah issued a firm statement from Bengaluru, asserting that strict legal action would be taken against any individuals involved in the violence, regardless of their status or influence. “No one is above the law,” he said.
Later in the evening, the state government acted swiftly to demonstrate its commitment to restoring order. Two top police officials – Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Anupam Agarwal and Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police Yateesh N – were transferred.
Additionally, the government announced the formation of a Communal Violence Control Force (CVCF), a specialized unit drawing personnel from the Anti-Naxal Force. The CVCF will be deployed in communally sensitive districts such as Mangaluru, Udupi, and Shivamogga, which have seen a recent spike in communal tensions.
The resignations and subsequent government action reflect growing anxiety and unrest among the coastal Karnataka Muslim population, who feel increasingly vulnerable amid escalating violence and political neglect.
