Mumbai: The Waqf Amendment Act is a clear attempt to seize waqf properties and undermine the Muslim identity, said Maulana Ilyas Khan Falahi, Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Maharashtra. He emphasized that Muslims must continue their peaceful protest against this law.
In a statement issued to the media, Maulana Ilyas Khan said that while it is important to pressure the central government through democratic means, state governments should also reject the Act, as Mamata Banerjee did in West Bengal. He criticized the government for working against public interest and accused it of targeting minority religious rights out of vengeance.
He further stated that although government officials claim that the recent Waqf Amendment Act is aimed at protecting waqf lands and the welfare of Muslims, the provisions included in the law clearly expose its malicious intent. These include the dissolution of Waqf Tribunals, handing over inquiries to District Collectors, and appointing non-Muslim members to Waqf Councils and State Waqf Boards.
Maulana Ilyas Khan Falahi affirmed that protest is a constitutional right. Since no section of the Muslim community is satisfied with the new amendment, he urged Muslims to continue their peaceful agitation until the law is repealed. He advised caution, urging people to stay peaceful, not be swayed by emotion or provocation, and ensure that the protest remains effective and free from violence. He also thanked West Bengal and other states that have announced their rejection of the law.
