Maulana Madani Rejects Misuse of ‘Jihad’ and Warns Against Terms Targeting Muslims

New Delhi: Jamiat Ulama i Hind President Maulana Mahmood Madani reaffirmed his position on the meaning of jihad and said the concept has been misused and distorted in public debate. He explained that the highest form of jihad is self improvement and the duty to speak against injustice. He said his organisation has worked for years to show how extremist groups twist Islamic terms to justify violence.

Madani drew a firm line between fasaadi groups and those who engage in legitimate religious struggle. He described fasaadi groups as those who create destruction and harm society. He said they aim to misuse faith based language to mask their actions.

He criticised the growing use of expressions such as love jihad, land jihad and vote jihad. He said these expressions have been created to target Muslims and to attach negative meaning to Islamic terms. He warned that such terms weaken social trust and create tension in communities.

On the debate around Vande Mataram, he said his organisation held internal discussions and reached a clear position against any forced implementation. He said dialogue with civil society is the best route. He said legal steps can be explored if needed.

Madani said his remarks promote clarity and do not support violence. He urged people to avoid misinterpretations and said misleading narratives help those who want to weaken the community from the outside and inside. He encouraged open discussion on Islamic concepts to prevent their misuse and to protect communal harmony.
