Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh — Tension gripped Bareilly on Sunday after Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan, president of the Ittehad-e-Millat Council (IMC), was placed under house arrest just hours before he was scheduled to lead a protest march to the District Collectorate.
The protest was planned as part of a symbolic “court arrest” movement by the Maulana and his associates to register their dissent against what he described as the state government’s “one-sided actions against Muslims.” The protest was scheduled for 1 PM.
In anticipation of unrest, the district administration deployed a heavy police force around Maulana Raza’s residence and implemented strict security arrangements. Senior administrative and police officials remained stationed in the area to monitor the situation. Authorities stated that the decision to detain Maulana Raza was preventive in nature, aimed at maintaining law and order.
Speaking to the media from house arrest, Maulana Tauqeer Raza criticized the police action, saying, “I wanted to surrender peacefully, but the police created panic and chaos.” He affirmed that his campaign would not be deterred, vowing to continue raising awareness among Muslims across India through similar peaceful initiatives.
The situation in Bareilly remains tense but under control, with security personnel on high alert.
