Meerut: A Muslim gym trainer was assaulted and later booked by police in Meerut after members of Bajrang Dal accused him of hiding his religious identity while meeting a Hindu woman during Valentine’s week.
The incident occurred in the Madhavpuram area near Brahmpuri police station. Sufiyan, a gym trainer, had visited a restaurant on Sharda Road with a woman friend. Eyewitnesses said Bajrang Dal workers arrived after receiving information that a Muslim man was sitting with a Hindu woman.
When questioned, the man allegedly introduced himself as Rahul. Once his identity as Sufiyan became known, an argument broke out inside the restaurant. Bajrang Dal members accused him of attempting love jihad by using a Hindu name. The confrontation escalated. He was taken outside and allegedly beaten.
Police from Brahmpuri station reached the spot after reports of disturbance. Officers took the injured trainer into custody and shifted him to a hospital for treatment. Authorities have not released details about his medical condition.
The woman was also taken to the police station. Police informed her family and recorded statements. Officials said her account would help determine if any coercion or deception took place.
Bajrang Dal functionaries submitted a complaint alleging cheating and harassment. Police registered a case under relevant sections based on the complaint. At the same time, officers said they are examining the assault on the trainer.
Circle Officer Saumya Asthana said police are reviewing CCTV footage from the restaurant and nearby areas. She stated that investigators are recording statements from both sides and will proceed according to the evidence.
