Meerut Police Warn of Passport, Driving Licence Cancellation for Offering Namaz on Roads During Eid

The Meerut Police in Uttar Pradesh have issued strict directives prohibiting the offering of namaz on roads during Eid-ul-Fitr. Authorities have warned that violators will face legal consequences, including FIRs, and may have their passports and driving licenses revoked.
Meerut SP City Ayush Vikram stated that religious leaders and imams have been urged to guide people to offer prayers only in mosques. He cautioned that any defiance of the directive would invite strict legal action. The administration has intensified surveillance using drones, CCTV cameras, and social media monitoring to ensure compliance.
Last year, similar violations led to cases being filed against 200 individuals, with over 80 being identified. This year, the police are on high alert, ensuring that road blockages for prayers do not occur. Special security forces will be deployed in sensitive areas to prevent disturbances. Additionally, anyone whose passport is revoked due to violations will need a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the court to obtain a new one.
Reacting to the move, Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary criticized the police’s approach on social media, calling it reminiscent of “Orwellian 1984.” He suggested that while maintaining road access is necessary, authorities should engage in meaningful dialogue with the community rather than resorting to punitive actions.
