Wealthy Elites Urge Higher Taxes on Super Rich to Protect Democracy

Davos: Nearly 400 millionaires and billionaires from 24 countries have urged global leaders to raise taxes on the world’s richest people. The appeal came through an open letter released during the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos.

The signatories warned extreme wealth concentrates power and weakens democratic systems. They stated unchecked riches allow a small group to influence governments, control media spaces, and limit fair economic participation. The letter argued widening inequality harms social cohesion and accelerates environmental damage.

Public figures from arts, culture, and philanthropy joined the appeal. They said wealth inequality deepens poverty and exclusion across societies. The letter stressed shared moral responsibility among rich and poor communities alike.

Survey data supported these concerns. A poll covering 3,900 millionaires across G20 nations showed 77 percent believe ultra wealthy individuals buy political influence. More than 60 percent viewed extreme wealth as a threat to democracy. Two thirds supported higher taxes on the super rich to strengthen public services. Only 17 percent opposed such measures.

The survey also found three fifths of respondents felt recent political leadership in the United States harmed global economic stability. These views reflected anxiety over growing political power held by wealthy elites.

Oxfam reported a record rise in billionaire numbers last year. The global total crossed 3,000 for the first time. Oxfam leadership stated the richest 1 percent now own three times more wealth than all public assets combined.

The appeal called on governments to act quickly. Supporters said fair taxation offers a path toward justice, social balance, and protection of democratic values.
