Mira Road: Senior Congress leader Syed Muzaffar Hussain accused the Election Commission of working under government pressure, citing large-scale irregularities in the voter list of Assembly Constituency 145, Mira Bhayander. Speaking at a press conference held at Smita Club, Hussain claimed that nearly 90,000 names in the electoral roll are questionable. These include names of deceased individuals, duplicate entries, and names of people who have migrated but remain on the list. He also pointed out that voters from Constituency 145 were shifted to 146 and vice versa, creating further confusion.
Hussain alleged widespread errors in voter registration, with names of residents placed in unrelated areas. He said the Election Commission had been alerted during the Assembly elections but failed to take corrective measures.
Criticising the upcoming municipal elections, he said the delimitation of wards was carried out based on the 2011 census, which he termed outdated and unjust. Some wards now have 100,000 voters, others 75,000, and some as few as 20,000, which he argued results in unequal representation. He added that the Congress submitted objections citing the Representation of the People Act and relevant court judgments. If ignored, the party would consider approaching the courts.
Hussain also raised concerns about the new Development Plan, saying objections were overlooked and the plan does not align with the city’s growth. On the shifting of the Dahisar toll naka, he welcomed the move but said traffic issues remain unresolved.
