Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a 40-year-old British citizen of Indian-Gujarati origin, emerged as the only known survivor of the devastating crash of Air India Flight AI 171. A resident of London for nearly two decades, Vishwash had travelled to Gujarat to reconnect with extended family – an ordinary journey, rooted in familiarity and belonging. His return flight to London was a quiet conclusion to a personal chapter. Like countless others, he boarded AI 171 unaware that he would be part of something extraordinary, and deeply tragic.
Seated in 11A, close to an emergency exit, Vishwash was likely granted a critical advantage. First responders believe that the location of his seat, combined with presence of mind and sheer timing, allowed him to escape the wreckage seconds before it was engulfed in flames. But no calculation can fully explain why he survived while hundreds perished. Sometimes, the boundaries between fate and physics blur beyond comprehension.
“There Were Bodies All Around Me…”
From his hospital bed in Ahmedabad, Vishwash recalled the harrowing moments:
“Thirty seconds after takeoff, there was a loud noise, and then the plane crashed… When I got up, there were bodies all around me… someone grabbed me and put me in an ambulance.”
