In a bold and emotional commencement address, Indian-American valedictorian and class president Megha Vemuri called out the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for its alleged complicity in what she described as the ongoing genocide in Gaza. Speaking at the graduation ceremony on Thursday, Vemuri voiced unwavering support for Palestine, sparking both admiration and controversy, reported the Hindustan Times.
Vemuri, who earned her undergraduate degree in computer science, neuroscience, and linguistics, used her platform to challenge MIT’s connections with Israeli institutions and military-affiliated projects.
“Right now, while we prepare to graduate and move forward with our lives, there are no universities left in Gaza,” she said. “We are watching Israel try to wipe Palestine off the face of the earth, and it is a shame that MIT is a part of it.”
Applause erupted as she continued, “You showed the world that MIT wants a Free Palestine.”
She criticized MIT’s exclusive research ties with the Israeli military, saying, “The Israeli occupation forces are the only foreign military that MIT has research ties with.” She further urged fellow graduates to act on conscience: “As scientists, engineers, academics, and leaders, we have a commitment to support life. Support aid efforts, call for an arms embargo, and keep demanding that MIT cuts the ties.”
While many praised Vemuri for her courage in standing up for human rights and voicing solidarity with Palestinians, she also faced online harassment and threats. Several pro-Israel voices accused her of antisemitism, warning that her stance might affect her professional future.
MIT has not yet issued any official comment in response to the speech or the controversy it generated.
Megha Vemuri, who hails from Alpharetta, Georgia, graduated from Alpharetta High School in 2021 before beginning her studies at MIT. She was actively involved in student leadership and served on the class council.
A National Merit Scholar, Vemuri has worked as a research assistant at the McGovern Institute for Brain Research and interned at the UCT Neuroscience Institute in South Africa. She is also a member of “Written Revolution,” an MIT student group that promotes radical dialogue and thought.
During her time at MIT, Vemuri also contributed to the development of AI curriculum and helped create a neuroscience program for high school students in Jordan.
Her commencement speech has reignited debate around campus activism, institutional responsibility, and the growing student-led movement for Palestinian rights.
