Mob Lynching in Aligarh: Six Arrested, Tensions Escalate

Aligarh, June 19: In a tragic incident in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh, a 35-year-old man, identified as Mohammed Farid alias Aurangzeb, was lynched by a mob on suspicion of theft. The incident occurred on Tuesday night in the Mama Bhanja locality. The Aligarh police have arrested six individuals and are actively searching for additional suspects named in the FIR, including five others.

The victim was reportedly seen exiting the home of Mukesh Chand Mittal, a textile trader, before being confronted by Mittal’s son, Rohit. As Rohit raised an alarm, the situation quickly escalated, leading to Farid being overpowered and brutally beaten by the mob. Videos circulating on social media show the man being assaulted with lathis, punched, kicked, and dragged on the road. A police officer later carried the injured Farid to a hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

In response to the incident, leaders from the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) joined the victim’s family in demanding the arrest of all involved suspects. SP leader Ajju Ishaq condemned the lynching, emphasizing the victim’s innocence and criticizing the current state government for the plight of minority communities.

Concurrently, Bajrang Dal volunteers, led by local convener Gaurav Sharma, gathered at the scene, defending the mob’s actions under the premise that the deceased had entered the house with the intent to steal. Sharma warned against shielding criminals and referenced the state’s strict anti-crime measures under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

The police have significantly increased their presence in the affected areas, deploying personnel from three stations and dividing the locality into eight sectors, each supervised by a Magistrate. Sporadic incidents of brick pelting have been reported, prompting authorities to ensure continuous communication with both community groups to maintain peace.

Inspector General Shalabh Mathur confirmed the measures taken to prevent further unrest and assured that all involved in the incident would be brought to justice. The body has been buried, and the police continue to work closely with community leaders to ensure calm.

This incident highlights ongoing tensions and the complex dynamics of law enforcement and community relations in the region.
