Mobile Data Usage in Makkah and Madinah Surpasses Global Average During Ramadan

Riyadh: The Communications, Space, and Technology Commission (CST) has reported record-breaking data consumption and enhanced mobile network performance in the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah during Ramadan 1446H, reported the Saudi Gazette.
According to CST’s latest findings, daily per capita data usage in Makkah reached 1,155 MB—over three times the global average—while Madinah recorded an even higher usage of 1,481 MB per person, exceeding four times the global average.
The report also highlighted a significant improvement in mobile internet speeds. In Makkah, average download speeds reached 196 Mbps, a 10% increase from the previous year. In Madinah, speeds surpassed 272 Mbps, reflecting a 26% year-on-year rise.
Voice call activity surged during the Umrah season, with Makkah registering over 355 million local calls and 43 million international calls. Meanwhile, Madinah recorded more than 205 million local calls and 20 million international calls.
CST credited the success of its operational plan for Ramadan to the collaboration between government and private sector entities dedicated to serving worshippers. The commission reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing digital infrastructure and ensuring seamless communication services, aligning with Saudi Arabia’s digital transformation goals.
