A remarkable act of honesty and gratitude has drawn widespread admiration after a man from Kerala travelled more than 1,200 kilometres to repay a debt he had owed for 31 years. Mohammed Ismail, a resident of Palakkad, used Google Maps and Google Gemini AI to trace his former colleague in Telangana and return money borrowed during their days as migrant workers in Saudi Arabia.
According to the account, Ismail and Edla Lachanna worked together at a construction company in Saudi Arabia during the early 1990s. At a time of financial hardship, Ismail borrowed 3,000 Saudi Riyals from Lachanna. Soon afterward, both men returned to India and gradually lost contact. Although decades passed, Ismail continued to feel a sense of responsibility to repay the amount.
Determined to fulfil his commitment, Ismail turned to technology to locate his former colleague. Remembering only that Lachanna belonged to Dharmapuri in Telangana’s Jagtial district, he began searching with the help of Google Maps and Google Gemini AI. His journey took him from Palakkad to Hyderabad and then onward to Jagtial, covering a distance of more than 1,200 kilometres.
When Ismail reached the address, he learned that Lachanna was still employed in Saudi Arabia. The family arranged a WhatsApp video call, allowing the two former colleagues to reconnect after more than three decades. Lachanna immediately recognised Ismail, who reminded him about the loan taken many years earlier.
Ismail transferred Rs 25,000 to Lachanna’s family through PhonePe, considering it an appropriate equivalent of the amount he had borrowed. The repayment surprised the family, who had long forgotten about the incident.
Lachanna’s son, Abhilash, expressed amazement at Ismail’s sincerity. He said he had not even been born when the loan was given and described the gesture as deeply moving. Lachanna’s wife, Gangavva, also appreciated Ismail’s determination to honour a promise made decades earlier.
The episode highlights how modern technology is helping reconnect people separated by time and distance. Digital tools enabled Ismail to trace an old friend with limited information, while digital payment services completed the repayment within minutes.
Beyond its technological aspect, the story has resonated because of the values it reflects. Ismail’s long journey to settle an old debt stands as an example of personal integrity, trust and the importance of fulfilling commitments, even after many years.
