New Delhi: Senior fast bowler Mohammed Shami has spoken openly about the abuse he has faced online, while stressing his commitment to hard work and performance. The 33-year-old pacer has not played for India since the 2023 ODI World Cup final and was overlooked for the Test series in England as well as the Asia Cup. Despite setbacks, he remains focused on earning his place back in the national team.
In a recent interview, Shami addressed the issue of social media trolling, recalling past instances when he was targeted after India’s defeats, particularly against Pakistan. After the 2021 T20 World Cup, he was subjected to harsh attacks, some labeling him a “traitor.” Responding to a question about whether Muslim cricketers are singled out during India-Pakistan clashes, Shami chose not to dwell on religion. Instead, he underlined the importance of professionalism, saying, “When you play for your country, you forget all such things. It becomes more important for you to take wickets and win matches.”
He advised players to stay away from social media during tournaments to avoid distractions. Shami also called for respectful criticism, stating, “True fans will never troll. If you have an objection, raise it respectfully. If you think you can do better than me, please come and try.”
His comments highlight the pressure faced by athletes in the age of online scrutiny. For now, Shami remains determined to prove his fitness and regain his spot in India’s bowling attack.
