Mojtaba Khamenei Calls for Closure of US Bases in First Address as Iran’s Supreme Leader

Tehran: Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei issued his first public message after assuming leadership following the death of his father Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a US Israel strike on Tehran on February 28. In a televised address carried by Iranian state media, Mojtaba Khamenei called for unity among citizens and urged participation in Quds Day events across the country.

In the address, the new leader demanded the immediate closure of all United States military bases in the region. He stated that the presence of foreign military installations near Iran threatens regional stability and sovereignty. He also declared that Iran would avenge citizens killed during the war and praised the country’s fighters who continue operations during the ongoing conflict.

Mojtaba Khamenei thanked the armed forces and resistance groups for their role during what he described as a period of pressure and attack on Iran. His message underlined the responsibility of the Iranian people, armed forces, executive institutions, and allied groups in confronting external threats. Iranian state television reported that the address outlined several key points related to the duties of state institutions, the role of the public, and cooperation with regional partners.

The new leader also stated that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed as part of pressure against Iran’s adversaries. The strategic waterway holds global importance for oil shipments, and the announcement signals Iran’s readiness to use economic pressure in response to military attacks.

Mojtaba Khamenei assumed leadership after the Assembly of Experts, an 88 member body responsible for selecting the country’s supreme leader, formally elected him following the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iranian officials earlier confirmed that Mojtaba himself sustained injuries during the US Israel strikes.

Reports indicated that he suffered injuries to his legs during the attack. Officials said he remained alert while recovering in a highly secure location. Limited public appearances and communication followed his appointment, largely due to security concerns regarding his whereabouts.

His first message now marks the beginning of Iran’s new leadership phase amid continuing regional conflict and growing geopolitical tension.
