Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh government plans to introduce the Uniform Civil Code, or UCC, Bill during the upcoming monsoon session of the state assembly, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced on Wednesday.
Speaking after a ceremony marking the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister Kailash Nath Katju, Yadav said the government would place several important and contemporary issues before the assembly. He confirmed that the UCC Bill would be among them and expressed confidence that it would secure passage during the session.
The monsoon session of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly is scheduled to run for five days from July 20. The session is also expected to include the presentation of the first supplementary budget for 2026-27 along with discussions on multiple bills and amendments.
The announcement follows earlier statements by the chief minister indicating that the state government intends to implement the Uniform Civil Code in Madhya Pradesh in the near future.
To advance the process, the government has constituted a six-member committee headed by a retired Supreme Court judge. According to Yadav, the committee is visiting districts across the state and gathering suggestions from people belonging to different religious communities.
The state government has also launched a dedicated website related to the UCC and appealed to citizens to submit their views and recommendations. Yadav said the government intends to move ahead after reviewing the committee’s findings.
The proposal has drawn criticism from the opposition Congress. Party leaders expressed concern over the impact of the proposed law on tribal communities. Former minister and state Congress media in-charge Mukesh Nayak alleged that the move could affect the identity, traditions, and constitutional rights of tribal groups and accused the government of creating divisions in the name of equality.
