Mumbai: An act of honesty by a Muslim auto-rickshaw driver in Mumbai has earned widespread praise after he returned ₹15,682 mistakenly transferred to his account by a passenger.
The incident involved Altaf, a Mumbai-based auto-rickshaw driver, and Shubham Gone, founder and chief executive officer of a company. What began as a routine ride later became a story shared widely across social media.
According to Shubham, he was rushing to attend an early morning meeting with an international client. After reaching his destination, he paid the fare through a digital payment application. The actual fare was ₹156. In his haste, he transferred ₹15,682 instead.
Shubham remained unaware of the mistake and headed directly to his meeting. When Altaf checked the payment, he discovered the large transfer. Instead of leaving, he chose to wait near the passenger’s destination.
After the meeting ended, Shubham stepped outside and found Altaf waiting for him. The driver informed him about the error and returned the entire amount immediately.
Shubham later revealed that he had no idea the wrong amount had been transferred. He said Altaf’s conduct impressed him even more because the driver refused to accept any reward. He also declined to take the original fare despite spending time waiting and missing potential customers.
Before leaving, Altaf reportedly told him, “The day has only just begun.”
The remark stayed with Shubham. About a week later, the client who had earlier declined to work with his company agreed to a business partnership. Remembering Altaf’s words, Shubham contacted him again and sent ₹500 as a token of appreciation.
