At the same time, influential Hindu businessmen linked to the ruling establishment continue to operate brands with Urdu or Muslim names without protest.
Recent incidents in Dehradun, Saharanpur, and Muzaffarnagar show a pattern. Members of right wing groups forced Muslim owned shops to shut down. Owners faced threats, police action, and accusations of hiding identity. A salon named Lucky Hair Dresser on GMS Road in Dehradun closed after activists objected to its name and handed the owner to police. Similar pressure surfaced during the Kanwar Yatra, when several Muslim run hotels and eateries were told to shut operations.
Traders and legal experts state no Indian law restricts shop names based on religion. Supreme Court rulings protect freedom of trade and choice of business identity. Forcing disclosure of religion violates constitutional rights.
The anger grows sharper due to visible double standards. BJP leader Pankaj Chaudhary markets an Ayurvedic oil named Rahat Rooh. The Urdu name attracts no objection. Large exporters owned by Hindus operate under names such as Al Kabir, Al Noor, and Arabian Exports. These firms trade openly in domestic and global markets.
Business experts say brand names reflect market trust and export needs. Religion plays no role in lawful commerce. Muslim traders argue enforcement targets only the weak. Police action against shopkeepers instead of intimidators has raised concern among civil rights groups.
The debate now questions equal protection under law. For Muslim traders, the issue involves safety, livelihood, and dignity. Calls for clear government directions to stop selective action continue to grow.
