Mumbai: A Muslim couple has alleged religious abuse and threats while shopping at a D Mart outlet in the Yashwant Gaurav residential area of Virar. The incident occurred at the billing section and later surfaced through videos shared on social media.
According to the Muslim woman, she and her husband stood in a queue when a Hindu couple ahead turned around and commented on her hijab. She alleged the woman used derogatory language and asked them to stay away due to their religion. When her husband objected to the behaviour, the situation escalated.
The woman alleged the Hindu man issued a grave threat directed at her identity as a Muslim woman. She said the remark included a threat of sexual violence. The allegation has triggered public concern after video clips recorded by the couple circulated online.
The woman stated nearby customers and D Mart staff failed to intervene. She alleged staff members asked the couple to speak in Marathi and warned future entry denial if they did not comply. She said no effort was made to calm the situation or ensure safety.
The couple later contacted Virar police. The woman alleged officers refused to register her complaint and insisted communication take place in Marathi. She said no woman constable was present during the interaction. She further alleged repeated calls from police officials asking the couple to visit the station and apologise to the other party.
She also accused D Mart authorities of withholding CCTV footage. She alleged staff told them Muslims would no longer receive entry at the store.
Police officials from Virar have not issued any response so far. The incident has raised questions around customer safety, religious discrimination, and response protocols within public retail spaces.
