New Delhi: The United Muslim Forum has sought suo motu action from constitutional authorities over recent public remarks made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma concerning Bengali speaking Muslims in the state. The Forum described the comments as harmful and warned of social and economic consequences for the Muslim community.
The Forum brings together faith leaders and professionals. It stated that public statements by the Chief Minister risk encouraging economic boycott and political exclusion of Muslims in Assam. The panel said living conditions for Muslims have declined over time and linked this trend to official rhetoric and administrative actions.
The Forum alleged that during the ongoing special revision of electoral rolls by the Election Commission of India, the Chief Minister publicly urged party workers to file objections aimed at deleting names of Muslim voters. According to the panel, such appeals threaten voting rights and weaken democratic participation.
The Forum also raised concern over reported calls for economic discrimination. It cited examples such as appeals to pay lower fares to Muslim autorickshaw drivers. The panel said such actions promote social division and weaken respect for law.
In response, the United Muslim Forum has appealed to the President of India to intervene. The panel requested removal of the Chief Minister from office. It also urged the Supreme Court of India to initiate suo motu proceedings to examine the remarks and their impact.
The Forum stressed the need for accountability from public office holders. It stated that public speech carries responsibility and shapes public conduct. The panel urged institutions to act in defense of equality, citizenship rights, and social peace.
