Hyderabad, June 29: Hyderabad’s Ulama, Muslim intellectuals and eminent citizens have voiced concern over the growing number of crimes, especially murders in the city involving Muslim youth.
A series of killings over the last few days has shocked the Muslim intelligentsia. Both the killers and the victims in these cases were Muslims.
Enmity between rival groups involved in criminal activities is the motive behind most of these killings. At least seven murders were reported during the last one week. Five of these incidents occurred in a span of 24 hours.
The murders were committed in brutal fashion. With no fear of anyone, the criminals committed murders in full public view.
Concerned over this disturbing trend, SC, ST, BC, Muslim Front organised a round table to discuss a strategy to contain it. Their unanimous view was that youth were indulging in drugs and crimes as they have distanced themselves from Islam and they lack education.
A resolution moved by Front Chairman Sanaullah Khan called for setting up committees at the local level for collective efforts to check the growing crime.
Former president of Jamaat-e-Islami Telangana, Moulana Hamed Mohammed Khan, said Muslims have forgotten their duty of promoting good and preventing evil. He said it was unfortunate that Muslim youth roam on the streets and in markets throughout the night. He stressed the need for the youth not to indulge in any activity after Isha prayers.
The United Muslim Forum demanded the government to take effective measures to check the growing number of murders. It called for creating an awareness against social waywardness, consuming liquor, drugs and domestic problems.
Moulana Mufti Sadiq Mohiuddin Faheem, Moulana Akbar Nizamuddin and other leaders of the Forum believe that the increasing number of murders point to not just law and order problems but also social waywardness.
Meanwhile, Moulana Hafiz Ahsan Bin Mohammed-al-Hamoomi, Imam and Khateeb of Shahi Masjid, has called for a social boycott of murderers.
In his Friday sermon, he said people say Ulama should speak against murders and murderers but not even one percent of those who are involved in murders or attempt to murder attend the sermons. They live among people and hence the society should boycott them. He said no leader or prominent personality should invite murderers to their functions.
He mentioned that under Islamic rule, the punishment for a murderer is death. Citing a Quranic verse, he said murderers will be forever in hell.
Family members, neighbours, mohalla committee, local leaders and even media know there is enmity between two persons but they don’t try to mediate. He suggested that mediation committees should be formed at mohalla level. All schools of thought, parties and media have to do this work.
Police have also taken a firm stand against keeping hotels and shops open till late in the night. It has also appealed to youth not to roam around after 11 p.m. It has warned of strict action to maintain law and order.
The killings are not just confined to roads, lanes and by-lanes. In a shocking incident in Hasan Nagar area, a woman killed her daughter-in-law following an argument over a petty issue. According to police, Farzana and her daughter-in-law Ajmeri Begum used to often fight with each other.
Farzana allegedly strangled Ajmeri Begum (28) to death with her scarf following an argument after the latter refused to make tea for her. Ajmeri Begum was wife of an auto-rickshaw driver and the couple had two children.
