Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh : In a tragic turn of events, a Muslim journalist couple from Kasba Barkheda in Pilibhit district, Uttar Pradesh, reportedly attempted suicide by consuming poison after facing alleged harassment from local authorities, reported the Maktoob Media. The incident unfolded after journalist Israr published a report exposing corruption in road construction, which reportedly prompted a retaliatory campaign against him and his wife, Miraj.
In a distressing video recorded just before the suicide attempt, Israr named Bisalpur SDM Nagendra Pandey, Barkheda Nagar Panchayat Chairman Shyam Bihari Bhojwal, and contractor Moin, accusing them of relentless harassment. “A few days ago, I reported corruption in road construction. The Chief Minister took note of the report. Since then, false cases have been filed against me and we have been harassed in multiple ways,” he stated in the video.
“We are left with no option but to drink poison,” Israr said, visibly emotional. He appealed to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for justice, stating that even the police, who were supposed to protect them, ended up tormenting their family.
Shortly after the video went viral on social media, family members rushed the couple to the district hospital, where they were admitted in critical condition. According to officials, both are now out of danger and receiving medical care.
The incident stems from a case of extortion registered against Israr by contractor Moin on May 19. The police had been attempting to arrest Israr, raiding his home multiple times. Israr maintained that the case was baseless and an act of vengeance for highlighting substandard construction by the Nagar Panchayat.
Circle Officer (CO) of Bisalpur confirmed that an investigation is underway. A statement released by Pilibhit Police noted, “The couple has consumed poisonous substances alleging harassment. Both are under treatment, and their condition is stable. The matter is being investigated.”
This incident has sparked outrage among journalists and civil rights advocates, who are demanding a fair and transparent probe into the allegations and the events leading to the suicide attempt.
