Muslim Leaders Meet Union Ministers, Seek Action Against Hate Crimes

Bengaluru: A delegation of Muslim leaders and intellectuals has urged the Union government to act against rising hate crimes targeting minorities in several parts of the country.

The group met Union Minister for Steel and Heavy Industries H D Kumaraswamy and shared concerns over incidents of harassment and inflammatory statements by certain political figures. Former home minister R Roshan Baig, who was part of the delegation, said the government must take tangible action against perpetrators and those who encourage such acts. He stressed that authorities should deal with offenders as per law.

On Monday, the delegation also met Defence Minister Rajnath Singh at his official residence. According to Baig, the meeting took place under the aegis of Indian Muslims for Progress and Reform, Delhi, led by M J Khan. The delegation expressed concern over reports of harassment faced by minorities and sought institutional engagement with the government in the interest of social harmony and national unity.

Baig clarified that Karnataka does not face such issues at present. He said the situation in several other parts of the country remains disturbing for Muslims and other minorities. He urged those in authority to rein in elements involved in hate driven acts.

The delegation included former judges, defence experts, senior journalists, intellectuals and civil society leaders. Members emphasized the need for lawful action, responsible public discourse and consistent monitoring of hate crimes. They called for clear accountability to protect minority rights and maintain communal peace.
