Kozhikode: An Indian Union Muslim League leader has said the party holds a rightful claim to the deputy chief minister post in Kerala if the United Democratic Front secures power in the coming assembly elections.
Former MLA KNA Khader made the remarks while speaking to the media in Kozhikode. He said the Muslim League qualifies for the post based on its electoral performance and long standing role within the UDF coalition. He said coalition partners are expected to recognise this position during government formation.
Khader said the party does not need to submit a formal request for the post. He said the UDF constituents are aware of the Muslim League’s standing and contribution. He added that recognition of the party’s role would lead to an appropriate decision once the coalition achieves a majority in the assembly.
He said every party within the UDF is expected to share this view. He expressed confidence that coalition partners would show clarity and agreement on placing the Muslim League in what he described as its respectful position within the government structure.
The statement comes amid discussions within the UDF on leadership roles ahead of the elections. The deputy chief minister post has emerged as a topic of political attention within the coalition.
Earlier, IUML all India secretary PK Kunhalikutty had taken a different position. He said the party would not demand the deputy chief minister post even if the UDF returns to power. He referred to a past instance when former chief minister Oommen Chandy had offered the post to the Muslim League. Kunhalikutty said the party had declined the offer at the time.
The comments reflect differing views within the party on approach and strategy. The issue continues to draw attention as election preparations progress across Kerala.
