Muslim Medical Colleges in India

Of late professional education is gaining ground in the largest minority community, Muslims in India. Apart from the government run colleges the community has established its own institutions. A survey of medical colleges run by the Muslims has shown encouraging results.

Kerala has highest number of allopathic medical colleges run by Muslims. The following seven colleges are spread in the northern part of the state; Azeezia Institute of Medical Sciences, Kollam; Al-Azhar Super Speciality Hospital and Medical College, Idukki; KMCT Medical College, Mukkam, Kozhikode; MES Medical College, Malappuram; Travancore Medical College, Mylapore; DM Wayanad Institute of Medical Sciences, Wayanad; and Karuna Medical College, Palakkad. There is one Unani medical college in Kozhikode, Markaz Unani College.

Uttar Pradesh comes second in medical education with five allopathic, and 11 Unani colleges. Lucknow has the highest numbers: Era’s Lucknow Medical College, Lucknow; Integral University, Dasauli, Lucknow; and Career Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow. Two Unani colleges: Iram Unani Medical College, Lucknow and Dr. Abdul Ali Tibbiya College, Lucknow.

With four allopathic medical colleges: Al-Ameen Medical College, Bijapur; Khwaja Bande Nawaz Institute of Medical Sciences, Gulbarga; Kanachur Institute of Medical Sciences, Mangalore and Yenopoya Medical College, Mangalore, Karnataka comes third.

There is one Homeopathy college, AM Shaik Medical College in Belgaum and the following four Unani colleges: HMS Unani Medical College Tumkur; Luqman Unani Medical College Bijapur; Tipu Sultan Unani Medical College, Gulbarga; and Inamdar Unani Medical College, Gulbarga.

Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana, has three medical colleges run by Muslims. Two allopathic Shadan Institute of Medical Sciences and Deccan College of Medical Sciences and one Unani medical college, Al Arif Unani Medical College. One college exclusive for women is also run by Muslim management in Aziznagar by name Dr. VRK Women’s Medical College (MBBS).

Andhra Pradesh has two allopathic colleges: Fathima Institute of Medical Sciences in Kadapa and Nimra Institute of Medical Sciences in Vijaywada and a Unani college, Dr. Abdul Huq Unani Medical College in Kurnool.

Gujarat has a lone homeopathy college at Vadodara by name Valan Homeopathy Medical College.

The Muslim community in Bihar runs five medical colleges, two allopathic and three Unani colleges which are as follows: Katihar Medical College, Katihar; Parbhani Medical College, Parbhani; ZH Unani Medical College Siwan, Salfia Unani Medical College Darbhanga and Sufia Unani Medical College Champaran.

The NCR Delhi has two medical colleges Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Al Falah Medical College, Faridabad. Whereas in Rajasthan there are two Unani medical colleges: Rajputana Tibbiya College and Rajasthan Unani Medical College, both in Jaipur.

Surprisingly there is no medical college run by Muslims in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
