Jalna: Shabbir Ahmed Ansari, founder and national president of the All India Muslim OBC Organisation, passed away in Jalna at the age of 75 after a long life of public service. He spent more than four decades working for reservation rights and social upliftment of Other Backward Classes, with a focus on backward Muslim communities.
Born in a modest farming family in Jalna, Ansari grew up with limited access to formal education. Despite this, he built a strong grassroots movement. He worked closely with occupational groups such as weavers, butchers, barbers, vegetable growers, oil pressers, and gardeners. These communities faced social and educational marginalisation.
In 1978, he co founded the All India Muslim OBC Organisation along with other leaders. The movement later expanded across Maharashtra and other states. Under his leadership, more than 100 large gatherings were held to raise awareness on reservation and rights.
His efforts contributed to the Maharashtra government decision in 1994 to include backward Muslim communities in the OBC category. After this, more than 57 government resolutions were issued to simplify certification and extend benefits. Ansari also opposed proposals which he believed would divide OBC communities, including sub quota policies based on religion.
Ansari maintained links with several public figures. Actor Dilip Kumar supported the movement and took part in its activities. Senior leader Chhagan Bhujbal also worked closely with him on issues related to OBC rights and constitutional protection.
Despite facing resistance, criticism, and even physical threats, Ansari continued his work. He remained active in public debates and opposed moves which he felt would harm existing OBC rights.
He is survived by his wife, three sons, and six daughters. His last rites are scheduled in Jalna. Leaders and activists across regions have paid tribute, calling his death a major loss for the social justice movement.
