SP Plans Bill for Separate Quota for OBC and Muslim Women in Legislatures

Budaun: Samajwadi Party leader and MP Dharmendra Yadav said his party will introduce a private member’s bill in Parliament seeking separate reservation for OBC and Muslim women within the women’s quota in legislatures.

Yadav stated that the Opposition had supported the women’s reservation law passed in 2023. He raised concern over the delay in its notification, which took three years. He questioned the need for a fresh draft if the implementation relied on the 2011 Census.

He pointed to lack of clarity in the current law regarding representation of OBC and Muslim women. He described this gap as the main issue. The proposed bill aims to address this concern and ensure inclusion of women from these communities.

Yadav also raised doubts about the government’s approach to delimitation. He referred to exercises carried out in Jammu and Kashmir and Assam, stating these developments weakened trust among Opposition parties. He said this has led to questions about the intent behind recent decisions.

He explained that a private member’s bill allows any Member of Parliament who is not a minister to introduce proposals on public issues not covered in government legislation.

On the possibility of a nationwide protest, Yadav said the party leadership will take a final call. He repeated that the Samajwadi Party supports women’s reservation. He stressed that implementation must ensure equal participation for women across all sections, including OBC and Muslim communities.
