Muslim Organisations in Tamil Nadu Launch Statewide Protests Against Waqf Bill

In a powerful display of unity and resistance, various Muslim organisations across Tamil Nadu staged statewide protests on Wednesday, voicing strong opposition to the controversial Waqf (Amendment) Bill introduced by the Central Government, reported the Madhyamam.
The protests were held under the banner of the Tamil Nadu Waqf Protection Committee, which includes a coalition of prominent Muslim groups such as the Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK), Indian National League (INL), Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK), Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), and the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI). The committee has warned that the proposed amendments to the Waqf Act pose a serious threat to the autonomy and constitutional rights of Waqf Boards.
Leaders at the protest alleged that the Bill gives undue powers to the Central Government to interfere in the functioning of Waqf Boards, which traditionally operate under state jurisdiction. They believe that such amendments would strip the boards of their authority, opening the door to political manipulation and asset mismanagement.
Protesters raised slogans and displayed placards, demanding the immediate withdrawal of the Bill. Many speakers stressed that the Waqf properties are religious and community assets meant for the welfare of Muslims and should not be subjected to centralised control.
The Tamil Nadu Waqf Protection Committee announced that it would intensify its agitation if the Centre fails to roll back the amendments. They also called upon secular and democratic forces to stand in solidarity with the Muslim community in defending their constitutional and religious rights.
