Dehradun, Uttarakhand: Muslim organisations protested Wednesday against the closure of madrasas and mosques by the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA).
Protestors gathered outside the district magistrate’s office, calling the move unjust. Police intervened and detained several demonstrators as tensions rose.
Muslim leaders condemned the action, especially during Ramadan. “This is clear discrimination,” said Naeem Qureshi. “No notice was given, nor any legal basis explained.”
They warned of intensified protests if the decision isn’t reversed. “This is unacceptable. We demand an explanation and reopening,” Qureshi added.
Authorities cited legal violations. SP City Pramod Kumar said, “Protestors refused to leave, so police intervened. They were detained and later released.”
In three days, MDDA sealed four madrasas and one mosque, calling them illegal. The Muslim community sees it as an attack on religious rights.
Officials assured discussions are ongoing.
