New Delhi: Prominent Islamic scholar Maulana Mahmood Ahmad Khan Daryabadi has called upon Imams and Khateebs across the country to dedicate today’s Friday sermons to the issue of Waqf (Islamic endowments), in light of the growing concerns over the government’s recent actions regarding Waqf properties.
This appeal comes under the umbrella of the “Waqf Bachao Muhim” (Save Waqf Campaign) launched by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), which includes an 11-point program aimed at raising awareness among the Muslim community.
Maulana Daryabadi emphasized that the central government has recently passed an amendment to the Waqf Act in Parliament, which he believes is detrimental to the safety and sanctity of Waqf properties. He cautioned that the government’s intentions are not sincere, alleging that it seeks to either take over Waqf lands or permanently remove already encroached properties from the Waqf domain.
He stressed the need for public awareness and urged the religious leadership to educate congregations about the gravity of the situation. “Muslims must not fall prey to government propaganda. They should assess the truth and understand the government’s intentions with an open mind,” he said.
The AIMPLB fears that the recent legislative changes are part of a larger design to weaken Muslim institutions under the guise of welfare and reform. Therefore, Maulana Daryabadi appealed to Imams and Islamic scholars to use their influential platforms during Friday sermons to inform and mobilize the community.
He concluded by urging the Muslim community to stand united in defending their Waqf properties and not be misled by narratives suggesting that the amendments are in their best interest.
