Muslim Students’ Body in Assam Appeals to President Over Harassment and Illegal Detentions

Guwahati— Expressing deep concern over what it called systematic harassment and illegal detention of Indian Muslims in Assam, the All Assam Minorities Students’ Union (AAMSU) has written to the President of India seeking immediate intervention, reported the Syllad.
In its memorandum, AAMSU highlighted ongoing injustices faced by Muslims in the state, particularly under the Foreigners’ Tribunal (FT) and the Assam Police Border Organization. The student body alleged that Indian citizens are being wrongly identified as foreigners and subjected to humiliating and traumatic verification processes, leading to mental, social, and financial distress.
AAMSU’s General Secretary, Imtiaz Hussain, emphasized that many Muslims who were born and raised in Assam have faced arbitrary notices to prove their citizenship, despite possessing valid documents such as electoral rolls and land records. He termed the practice as a violation of the fundamental rights guaranteed under the Indian Constitution.
“We urge your honorable office to take immediate steps to end this discrimination against Indian Muslims and ensure justice for the affected citizens,” the memorandum to the President stated.
The letter also criticized the state machinery for allegedly operating with a communal bias, claiming that the burden of proving citizenship unfairly falls on the Muslim community. AAMSU called for disbanding the Border Police and reforming the functioning of the Foreigners’ Tribunals, demanding that cases be handled with transparency and due process.
This appeal comes amid growing concerns over the misuse of laws and institutions to target minority communities across the country. AAMSU’s initiative reflects the broader anxieties within Assam’s Muslim population, who fear further marginalization and exclusion from the democratic process.
The student union has also announced plans to launch peaceful democratic movements if no action is taken by the President’s office in response to their memorandum.
