Muslim Traders Barred from Maharashtra’s Kinfanath Yatra, Sparking Concerns Over Religious Exclusion

New Delhi : Muslim traders have been prohibited from participating in the upcoming Kinfanath Temple Yatra in Maharashtra’s Pathardi Taluka, with local authorities citing adherence to traditional customs as the reason behind the ban. This move follows a growing pattern of exclusion, as similar restrictions were recently imposed on Muslim traders during the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, raising concerns over religious and economic marginalization.
The Kinfanath Yatra, which takes place between Holi and Gudi Padwa, holds significant religious importance for the local Hindu community. Devotees observe a period of mourning, abstaining from fried foods and festivities, and argue that Muslim traders do not conform to these customs, allegedly disrupting the sanctity of the event.
Sanjay Bajirao Markd, the village head and chairman of the Kinfanath Temple Trust, defended the decision, stating, “Muslim traders do not follow our customs. We are in a sensitive phase, and they disregard our traditions, which causes distress among devotees.” He further referenced the ban on Muslim traders at the Kumbh Mela, asserting that the same principle applies to the Kinfanath Yatra.
Markd also alleged that some Muslim traders engage in unethical practices, claiming they mislead devotees and operate illegal businesses. “In the past, there have been incidents of devotees being attacked. Many devotees have raised concerns, leading to this decision,” he stated.
The ban reflects a rising trend in India, where Hindu nationalist groups are increasingly restricting Muslim participation in religious events. Critics argue that such measures are not only discriminatory but also part of a broader effort to economically marginalize the Muslim community.
Muslim leaders and activists have strongly opposed these bans, viewing them as deliberate attempts to isolate Muslims and weaken their presence in public spaces. The growing trend of exclusion raises pressing concerns about religious tolerance, economic fairness, and the future of interfaith harmony in India.
