Muslim Traders Organize Wedding for Five Hindu Women in Kolkata

Kolkata :In a heartwarming display of communal harmony, the Jamaat-ul-Raeen, a predominantly Muslim traders’ organization in West Bengal, organized the wedding of five Hindu women whose families could not afford the expenses. The event took place at Machhwa Phool Mandi in Kolkata, with traders closing their shops to participate in this charitable initiative.
Muhammad Sohrab, President of Jamaat-ul-Raeen, stated that this initiative began last year as a means to support women from economically weaker sections, regardless of their religious background. Initially intended for Muslim families, the organization later expanded its support to include Hindu families who reached out for assistance.
The wedding ceremony was conducted under separate canopies for each couple, ensuring a traditional and respectful arrangement. The organization bore all expenses, covering wedding arrangements and gifting essential household items, including an almirah, bed, blankets, shawls, sarees, sandals, utensils, and the Bhagavad Gita.
Muhammad Sohrab emphasized that the effort was driven by a commitment to social unity and collective welfare. “Our organization includes both Muslims and Hindus, and we felt that helping girls from underprivileged families get married was a step toward strengthening our social fabric,” he said.
Other key members of Jamaat-ul-Raeen, including Akram, Muhammad Mumtaz, Shahid Ahmad Khan, Bilal Ahmad, Aamir Ishtiaq, and Sanjay Sarkar, played an active role in making the event a success. The organization also provided meals for the families of the bride and groom.
To maintain transparency, the names of the five Hindu women and their grooms were publicly announced. Muhammad Sohrab reaffirmed that the initiative was not based on religious considerations but solely on economic need. “We respect people of all faiths equally, and our goal is to promote unity and brotherhood in society,” he said.
Encouraged by the success of the event, Jamaat-ul-Raeen plans to organize similar weddings in the future, furthering their mission to bridge societal divides and assist those in need. “This is just the beginning. We aim to help more families, rising above distinctions of religion, caste, and creed,” Sohrab added.
This noble effort highlights the power of communal solidarity and underscores the importance of collective social responsibility in fostering a more inclusive society.
