Mahila Congress Slams Bias After Muslim Woman Denied Treatment in UP Hospital

New Delhi: The Mahila Congress has condemned the denial of medical care to a pregnant Muslim woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur district. The woman was reportedly turned away from a hospital after staff learned of her faith, forcing her to seek treatment elsewhere. The incident has drawn strong criticism for exposing growing communal prejudice in public institutions.

Mahila Congress president Alka Lamba called the act “utterly shameful,” saying no society should tolerate discrimination in medical services. She urged authorities to punish those responsible and warned that allowing such bias to spread would erode the moral fabric of the nation. Lamba said hospitals are meant to provide care and compassion, not reflect divisions based on religion.

The party has demanded a government inquiry and immediate disciplinary action against the hospital staff involved. Women’s groups and human rights activists have echoed this demand, urging the state health department to issue strict guidelines against religious discrimination in hospitals.

Lamba said denying healthcare to a woman in distress violates constitutional guarantees and human dignity. She appealed to civil society and political leaders to resist efforts to normalise communal bias in essential services. The Mahila Congress has also announced plans to send a fact-finding team to Jaunpur to meet the victim’s family and document the incident.
