Patna: A Muslim woman allegedly faced public humiliation in Bihar’s Nawada district after a group of men intercepted her while she was travelling on a motorcycle with a male companion. The incident came to light after a video circulated widely on social media on July 8.
According to police findings, the woman was forced to remove her niqab during the confrontation. Her companion was also allegedly coerced into applying sindoor on her forehead while the pair stood surrounded by the group.
After the video gained attention online, claims circulated that the man belonged to a different religious community. Police launched an investigation, traced the motorcycle through its registration records and identified both individuals. Officers also examined other available evidence.
The investigation found that the man and woman belonged to the same community and had been in a relationship for some time. Police said they were travelling together with mutual consent when a group described as anti social elements stopped and harassed them.
Following the inquiry, police registered a First Information Report and identified those allegedly involved in the incident. A few suspects have been arrested, while the investigation continues.
The incident has renewed concern over reports of harassment targeting Muslims, particularly in states governed by the BJP and its allies. It also renewed attention on incidents involving self styled vigilante and Hindutva linked groups over personal choices and social interactions.
Videos of such confrontations often circulate widely on social media before police action follows. The latest case from Bihar has once again raised concerns over the safety and dignity of Muslims facing public intimidation.
