Muslim World League Welcomes India-Pakistan Ceasefire Amid Tensions

Makkah: The Muslim World League (MWL) has welcomed the recently announced ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan, praising it as a positive and responsible step toward regional peace and stability, reported the ANI.
In a statement issued by the General Secretariat, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa, Secretary-General of the MWL and Chairman of the Organisation of Muslim Scholars, commended the leadership of both nations for prioritising diplomacy and dialogue over conflict.
Sheikh Al-Issa highlighted the constructive and swift responses from both sides, which reflect a shared desire to avoid escalation and pursue peaceful resolution. He emphasized that the ceasefire aligns with the broader national interests of both countries and sets the foundation for ongoing diplomatic engagement.
The MWL reiterated its support for peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and sustainable development in South Asia. Sheikh Al-Issa expressed hope that the ceasefire would pave the way for continued dialogue and improved relations between India and Pakistan.
The ceasefire agreement followed heightened military actions triggered by India’s Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The operation was in response to a terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22 that killed 26 civilians, including a Nepali national.
Following the operation, tensions escalated with increased cross-border shelling. However, on Saturday, Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations reached out to his Indian counterpart, resulting in an agreement to cease all military actions across land, air, and sea, effective from 5 pm.
Despite the agreement, reports emerged of Pakistani drone intrusions intercepted by Indian air defences in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan during blackouts. India condemned these violations and urged Pakistan to act responsibly.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that India views the breaches seriously and expects Pakistan to uphold the terms of the ceasefire. Another round of DGMO-level talks is scheduled for May 12.
The MWL reaffirmed its commitment to supporting any initiative that fosters peace, understanding, and harmony in the region.
