Muslim Youth Brutally Beaten in Haridwar in Suspected Hate Crime; No Arrests Yet

– Abdul Bari Masoud

New Delhi/Haridwar – A 22-year-old Muslim man, Mueeb, was brutally attacked by a mob near Gurukul Kangri University, Haridwar, on the night of June 26.
The mob of 8–10 men reportedly asked his name. After learning his Muslim identity, they began abusing and beating him with sticks.
The assault occurred around 8:00 p.m. in a public area often visited by students and locals.
Mueeb, an electrician from Jwalapur, was found unconscious. He was rushed to Government G.D. Hospital. The hospital gave basic first aid but refused admission, saying no surgeon was available.
His father, Mujeeb, then took him to a private clinic. Due to costs, the family brought him home the next day. That evening, Mueeb’s condition worsened, and he developed a high fever. A local doctor advised urgent hospital care.
Later that night, the family and activists went to Kankhal police station and filed a complaint. A case was registered, but no one has been arrested.
Police briefly detained a man named Pawan on June 28, but he was released after questioning.
Activists and civil society groups condemned the attack. They blamed authorities for not acting swiftly.
Janadhikar Party and Khudai Khidmatgar members met the victim’s family. They are demanding justice and action under hate crime laws and Supreme Court guidelines.
“This is not just a personal assault—it’s an attack on the rule of law,” said Hema Bhandari of Janadhikar Party. She called such violence “deeply disturbing.”
The incident highlights a rise in hate crimes and mob violence across India.
Civil society groups are urging the Uttarakhand government and police to act quickly and fairly. They want justice for Mueeb and a strong message against communal attacks.
