New Delhi: A 22-year-old Muslim man, Salman, died after being brutally assaulted in Delhi’s Nand Nagri area on Diwali night. The incident has sparked outrage and renewed concerns over the safety of Muslims in the capital.
According to police, the altercation began as a dispute between two groups near Gagan Cinema flyover, where Salman and his friends were recording a short video. He sustained severe injuries and died two days later at GTB Hospital. Salman, a scrap dealer, was described by his family as a hardworking young man with no enmities.
His brother, Anan, alleged that the police failed to act promptly. “We were told he was lying on the road, covered in blood. When we reached, he was unconscious. The police arrived late,” he said. The family suspects Salman was targeted for his faith, a sentiment echoed by locals who claimed that attacks on Muslims often go unpunished.
Residents gathered outside GTB Hospital demanding a transparent investigation. Local activist Rashid Ali stated, “A boy was beaten to death on Diwali, and no one is speaking out. This silence is frightening.”
The police said a case under Section 105 IPC (culpable homicide) has been registered, and CCTV footage is under review. Teams have been deployed to identify and arrest the assailants.
Community leaders and rights advocates have urged authorities to ensure accountability. Advocate Sameer Khan said, “This case reflects growing intolerance and the lack of safety for Muslim youth in Delhi.”
