Hyderabad, Jan 29: The brutal murder of a refugee from Myanmar by a rowdy sheeter has sent shockwaves among other citizens of Myanmar who have taken refuge here.
Mohammed Ibrahim (22), a refugee registered with the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), was waylaid by one Asif, who demanded Rs.2,000 from him.
Ibrahim, a daily wage labourer, told him that he was returning home after earning Rs.700 and that his wife and child were waiting for him. However, Asif took out a knife and stabbed him repeatedly, resulting in his death. The incident occurred on Sunday at Wadi-e-Saleheen when the refugee was returning home in Balapur.
The murder took place under the limits of Pahadi Shareef police station of Rachakonda Commissionerate. Police later arrested Asif, who has several criminal cases registered against him.
The deceased had a 15-month-old baby girl and was the only bread earner of his family consisting of wife and aged parents.
The murder sent shockwaves among Myanmar refugees living in Balapur and other areas in the old city.
The protestors gathered outside the police station on Monday and demanded stringent punishment for the guilty. A policeman was also injured in stone pelting by a few protestors.
Amid a tense situation, the deceased was buried in the area. Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT) leader Amjed Ullah Khan Khalid also participated in the burial.
He demanded immediate action against Asif. He said a habitual offender and drug addict involved in two murder cases and one attempt to murder case was allowed to roam freely by the police. He asked why Rachakonda police did not send him to jail by invoking the Preventive Detention Act.
Khan said for many days Asif and his associates were demanding money from Rohingyas and attacking those refusing to give money.
