Najeeb Ahmed Case Closure Sparks Outrage, Mother Vows to Fight Till Her Last Breath

New Delhi – The mother of missing JNU student Najeeb Ahmed has vowed to continue her fight for justice after a Delhi court allowed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to close her son’s case. Najeeb, a first-year biotechnology student, went missing under suspicious circumstances from Jawaharlal Nehru University in October 2016, as per a report by the Times of India.
Fatima Nafis, Najeeb’s mother, expressed her anguish in a Facebook post following the court’s decision. She accused the CBI and Delhi Police of gross negligence and inaction, especially against members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), who were allegedly involved in a scuffle with Najeeb shortly before his disappearance.
“It’s been almost nine years since my son went missing. But the negligence shown by the Delhi Police and CBI from the very beginning has brought us to this tragic point,” Nafis wrote, declaring that she will not stop until she gets justice. “I will fight till my last breath,” she added.
Nafis criticized the investigating agencies for failing to act against the ABVP students whom she described as “goons” who assaulted her son. “Neither Delhi Police nor CBI arrested or took any action against the ABVP-linked students, the goons who assaulted my son and then made him disappear,” she charged.
The case was initially handled by the Delhi Police before being transferred to the CBI. However, the central agency closed its investigation in October 2018, citing a lack of evidence. On Monday, it filed a closure report which was accepted by Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Jyoti Maheshwari, who also granted liberty to reopen the case if any credible new information emerges regarding Najeeb’s whereabouts.
Despite the closure, Nafis remains determined to approach higher courts in her quest for justice. She emphasized that her struggle is not just personal but a fight for every mother seeking justice for her child.
In her statement, she also praised the continued support from student communities. “Throughout this time, when the system tried to silence us, students from JNU and across the country — from AMU to Jamia — stood with me. These very children faced police batons on the roads and raised their voices for us,” she said.
Najeeb Ahmed disappeared from JNU’s Mahi-Mandavi hostel on October 15, 2016, a day after he was allegedly assaulted by ABVP-affiliated students.
The CBI’s closure report marks another painful chapter in the unresolved mystery surrounding Najeeb’s disappearance, leaving his family without closure and justice nearly a decade later.
