National Doctor’s Day 2024: Celebrating Healing Hands and Heartfelt Care Amidst Modern Challenges and Islamic Heritage

By Ayesha Sultana

National Doctor’s Day, celebrated annually on July 1st in India, honors the legacy of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, a prominent physician, freedom fighter, and former Chief Minister of West Bengal. This year’s theme, “Healing Hands, Caring Hearts,” underscores the dedication, compassion, and empathy inherent in the medical profession. However, it also presents an opportunity to address contemporary issues that threaten the sanctity of this noble field, such as the corruption involved in securing medical degrees. Additionally, we reflect on the rich history of medicine in Islamic tradition, highlighting its contributions and perspectives.

Honoring a Legacy
Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy’s legacy is marked by significant contributions to medical education and public health in India. He was instrumental in founding the Indian Medical Association and the Medical Council of India, and his dedication earned him the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor. National Doctor’s Day commemorates his birth and death anniversary, celebrating the vital role doctors play in society, especially underscored during the global fight against COVID-19.

Confronting Modern Challenges
Amidst the celebrations, it is crucial to acknowledge the growing issue of corruption in medical education. The unethical practice of purchasing MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) seats undermines the integrity of medical training and endangers patient care. This malpractice compromises the future of healthcare by allowing unqualified individuals into the profession, thereby risking the lives and well-being of patients who depend on skilled and ethical medical practitioners.

The Islamic Golden Age of Medicine
Islam has a storied history of significant contributions to the field of medicine, particularly during the Islamic Golden Age. Pioneers like Al-Razi (Rhazes) and Ibn Sina (Avicenna) made monumental advancements that shaped medical knowledge globally. Al-Razi’s extensive medical encyclopedia and Ibn Sina’s “The Canon of Medicine” served as foundational texts in both the Islamic world and Europe, underscoring the profound impact of Islamic scholars on the evolution of medical science.

Health and Healing in Islamic Tradition
The importance of health is deeply embedded in Islamic teachings. The Qur’an and Hadith provide guidance on the significance of seeking medical treatment and maintaining health. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized, “There is no disease that Allah has created, except that He also has created its treatment.” (Sahih Bukhari) This highlights the Islamic view that medical intervention is a duty, and preserving health is a form of worship and stewardship.

The Qur’an also reflects on divine healing, stating, “And when I am ill, it is He who cures me.” (Qur’an 26:80) This verse acknowledges that while medical treatment is essential, ultimate healing is a manifestation of Allah’s mercy and power.

Reflecting and Moving Forward
National Doctor’s Day 2024 is a dual celebration and a call to action. It is a day to honor the selfless service of doctors who have committed their lives to saving others. Simultaneously, it is a reminder of the need to uphold the highest ethical standards in the medical profession. Combating corruption in medical education is paramount to ensuring that only those truly qualified can carry forward this noble work.

Reflecting on the Islamic heritage of medicine and its emphasis on ethical practice, we are reminded of the profound responsibility that comes with the medical profession. As we celebrate our doctors, let us also pledge to maintain integrity and honor the sacred trust placed in healthcare providers, ensuring a healthier and more ethical future for all.

By acknowledging our past, addressing present challenges, and committing to future integrity, we can truly honor the spirit of “Healing Hands, Caring Hearts” that defines the medical profession.
