Imphal: The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has released fresh data revealing an alarming rise in violent crimes in Manipur during 2023, a year marked by the ethnic conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities.
The report records a total of 14,427 crimes in the state during the year, making Manipur one of the most violence-hit states in India. Crimes against Scheduled Castes surged to unprecedented levels, with 3,339 cases reported. This marks a sharp increase compared to a single case in 2022 and none in 2021. Assam stood second with far fewer numbers.
Among the most reported crimes in Manipur were rioting with 5,421 cases and arson with 6,203 incidents. The state also reported 330 robberies and 1,213 incidents of dacoity. The ethnic unrest that began in May 2023 has left over 260 people dead and forced thousands into temporary relief camps.
The NCRB further noted 151 murders, 818 cases of attempted murder, 89 kidnappings, and 2 cases of rape. Analysts and rights groups have described the situation as deeply troubling, urging immediate steps for peacebuilding and rehabilitation.
The conflict has displaced large numbers of people, particularly from vulnerable communities, raising concerns over long-term humanitarian impact. Activists stress that both the human cost and the erosion of trust between communities need urgent attention from policymakers.
